Do CATs Expire

Do C-A-T® Tourniquets Expire?

How Do You Know When It's Time to Replace a Tourniquet?

There is no expiration date if the following conditions are met.

The C-A-T® is a single-use medical device and has no shelf life as long as it remains unused, in protective packaging, and stored in a dry, dark, climate-controlled space. Once the C-A-T® has been used, either by a patient or authorized personnel carrying the device, or exposed to inclement weather such as hot/cold temperatures, sand, dirt, etc., the shelf life will then become obsolete.

What you need to do is make sure that it's still serviceable, in good condition, and ready to save a life. Before any potential use, inspect the tourniquet.

  • Windlass: Check the windlass to ensure it is intact and functional.
  • Self-Adhering Band: Inspect the self-adhering band for any signs of wear.
  • Fraying Edges: Look specifically for fraying at the edges.
  • Stitching: Examine the stitching to see if any threads are coming loose.
  • Color Changes: Look for any changes in color, especially if it has been exposed to the sun for too long. Discoloration is a good sign that it's time to replace it.

Remember, the C-A-T® is a single-use device. After one use, it should not be reused. It's important not to risk using a product that may not be in the best condition for a second use, as it is a life-saving procedure.

For training purposes, we have a blue tourniquet specifically designed for repeated practice use. Use it over and over, but never in a real-world situation.
